July 6, Fineko/abc.az. While the countries are trying to agree on the status of the Caspian Sea - the ecological system of the sea is on the verge of disaster.

The statement was made in an interview with TASS, special representative of the President of the Russian Federation on issues of humanitarian and economic cooperation with the countries of the Caspian region and former head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov, the Caspian Sea has already caused vast damage.

"It is no exaggeration to say that the Caspian Sea is already on the verge of a catastrophe in a number of areas, and the Tehran Convention on the preservation of the Caspian Sea, signed a few years ago, is not working very effectively. Not so long ago, I was in Iran on a working trip, and at the level of the country's leadership, we talked about the need to establish environmental control in order to have the opportunity to develop promising areas for the region in the future. To date, the Caspian States are not effectively managing the Caspian and cause not only environmental damage to this territory, but also economic damage to themselves, because while we are not working mobile enough, companies from third countries come to the Caspian," Abdulatipov said.
