Surgut airport to be named after discoverer of oil in Siberia, Farman Salmanov

December 5, Fineko/abc.az. The results of contest ‘Great Names of Russia’, following which 42 of 47 airports received new names, have been announced. Nizhnevartovsk is among the airports, the question on which remains open.

The Surgut airport was named after the Azerbaijan-born discoverer of oil in Siberia, Farman Salmanov.

In the final stage of the voting competition, his name beat the names of Alexander Filipenko and Yeramko Timofeevich, as 58% of the voting participants gave their votes to the name of Azerbaijani geologist. Air gates of New Urengoy will also bear the name of geologist - Ivan Gubkin. 46% oftherespondentsvotedforhim.

The new name will be added to the existing name of the airports after President Vladimir Putin signs a decree on naming Russian airports.

Most residents of Nizhnevartovsk also voted for Farman Salmanov, but their share was less than in Surgut - 45%. According to Expert Council’s decision, the 2nd round of the final voting will be held in three cities that lost in the competition for these names. The shortlists will be added by one name from the list of VTSIOM, following the names of the finalists. Thus, Nizhnevartovsk residents will be given choice:  Nicholas Arkhangelsk (a military pilot), Alexander Filipenko (a statesman) or Viktor Muravlenko (an oilman).

Contest ‘Great Names of Russia" was announced in October. Its initiator is the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation.
