Domodedovo named after Lomonosov and Sheremetyevo named after Pushkin

17:03 - 5.12.2018

December 5, Fineko/abc.az. Two Moscow airports Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo will be given the names of great compatriots.

Following poll contest ‘Great Names of Russia’, most of the respondents chose for the Sheremetyevo airport the name of the great writer Alexander Pushkin, and for the Domodedovo airport the name of scientist Mikhail Lomonosov.

The 2nd round will be conducted for the Vnukovo airport. The point is that the surname of one of the founders of the world aerospace industry Sergei Korolev has scored the largest number of votes. The Samara residents also voted for it, choosing a new name for their international airport.

The results of the survey contest will be the basis for an appeal to the authorities of Moscow. None of the airports will change their names. The airport name will be just added the name of the great figure of the past: the Domodedovo airport will be named after Lomonosov and the Sheremetyevo after Pushkin.

The St. Petersburg airport will not be called the name of Peter the Great: this title will be given to the Voronezh airport, as this option has received the most votes. The 2nd place in the vote was taken by Alexander Nevsky. In addition, among the options the Pulkovo airport could also be called in honor of the sun of Russian poetry. However, the name of Alexander Pushkin did not receive sufficient support.

The second rounds of the poll contest will also cover Arkhangelsk and Nizhnevartovsk from 5 to 14 December 2018. The decision to assign names to Moscow airport Vnukovo and Penza airport was postponed after the decision of the Expert Council of the competition.
