President Ilham Aliyev: Development of renewable energy is a priority for Azerbaijan

17:51 - 14.01.2020

January 14, Fineko/abc.az. At yesterday’s meeting President Ilham Aliyev raised a range of questions, including the ones concerning new power plants to be built in Azerbaijan.

ABC.AZ reports that the country’s leader stated that currently the share of renewable energy in our energy balance is about 17-18%.

The head of state pointed out that development of renewable energy is a priority for Azerbaijan, which has modern energy infrastructure and rich resources for development of wind and solar energy.

"According to our long-term strategy, we should bring it to at least 30%. I should also note that nine companies participated in the competition. In other words, nine large companies are ready to invest in renewable energy production in Azerbaijan," President Aliyev emphasized.

According to the head of state, only two companies with the best conditions were selected: "But this does not mean that other companies were left out, we invite them as well. Let them once again consider their proposals, make the conditions more acceptable for us, for our country, and there is enough space for them in Azerbaijan. Thank God, Azerbaijan is a country rich in solar energy and wind, and has modern energy infrastructure. Again, Azerbaijan ranks the 2nd in the world in terms of energy availability in the Davos report. We also have exports, and last year we exported for more than $60 million. Therefore, I’m sure the creation of renewable energy is going to become our next priority. I task the Cabinet Ministers to consider the proposals of companies participating in the competition, invite them, hold individual negotiations with them and implement a similar project in Azerbaijan."
