Agreed rates for North-South Project cargo traffic to be developed

12:55 - 23.10.2017

The prospects of international transport corridor North-South have been discussed in Riga.

Azerbaijani Railways (ADY) informs that ADY chairman Javid Gurbanov, Belarusian Railways’ head Vladimir Morozov and Iranian Railways CEO Sayid Mohammadzade held a meeting in the Latvian capital within the framework of the 67th session of Council for Rail Transport of the CIS & Baltic States.

"The working meeting also involved Russian Railways’ president Oleg Belozerov. During the event the sides covered the prospects of development of international transport corridor North-South, construction of railway line Rasht-Astara and other matters," ADY reported.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to establish a working group on the western route of North-South corridor and signed a relevant protocol.

"In the opinion of the meeting participants, in order to maintain trends of growth, it is necessary to focus logistics companies’ attention on the creation of regular transport services and development of agreed tariff rates that meet the interests of all parties and conduct work on simplification of procedures of customs clearance of goods," ADY said in a statement.

Importance of cooperation between all the participants (railways, ports, sea carriers, customs services) of the logistic chain was underlined during the meeting. Creation of a direct railway communication via the western route of North-South corridor, that demands construction and commissioning of the last missing link of the corridor − Rasht-Astara rail line, can help accelerate and reduce the cost of delivery of goods between Europe, Belarus, Russia, countries of Persian Gulf and South Asia.

For the first 9 months of 2017 the cargo transportation via North-South corridor increased by 21.6 % and exceeded 4.7 million tons. Compared to last year, volume of container transportation has grown 2.4-fold – more than 7,000 containers were delivered via the corridor.

Last year, Russian RZD Logistika in cooperation with foreign partners carried out a test sending of containers from India to Russia through Iran and Azerbaijan via the western route of the corridor.
