September 21, Fineko/abc.az. A groundbreaking ceremony of the Agbend Automobile Bridge has been held today, with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev and Minister of Roads & Urban Development of Iran Rustam Qasemi. The bridge will be built on the state border with Iran on the territory of the East Zangezur Economic Region.

ABC.AZ reports that the project will create additional opportunities for the countries of the region by increasing the potential of the East-West transport corridor, as well as expanding transport and economic ties in the region.

The event was attended by a delegation of Iran and representatives of the Ministry of Digital Development & Transport of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Energy, the State Customs Committee, the State Border Service, the State Agency of Highways of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Railways.

The bridge connecting the 112-km-long Goradiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Agbend highway with the Iranian highway network across the Araz River is designed to be 216 m long and 24.5 m wide. The project envisages two lanes for cars and one lane for pedestrians in each direction. It is also planned to build a checkpoint on the territory of the two countries, which will be able to receive at least 1,000 cargo vehicles daily (500 at the entrance and 500 at the exit).

At the laying ceremony, confidence was expressed that the new bridge will serve to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries, further develop transport links and increase the transit potential of the region.
