8 recommendations for patients with kidney stones


June 12, Fineko/abc.az. The main cause of kidney stone disease is insufficient fluid intake. But the cause is not only in that. Some foods and bad habits can also lead to kidney stones.

What should be done in this case?

1. Increase the amount of liquid taken

Fluid intake reduces a probability of the connection and solidifying of salt crystals. During the day, it is recommended to take about 2.5 liters of liquid. Drinking water should make 80-90% of the liquid.

2. Reduce the amount of salt consumed

The daily intake of salt for adults is a maximum of 5 g. It should be taken into account that sausages, ready-made products and semi-finished products, potato chips, most canned pickles, cheeses, canned meat and fish, canned vegetables, sauces are considered salt products.

3. Reduce the consumption of foods rich in calcium oxalate

In most cases, stones are formed in the composition of oxalate salts. Foods rich in oxalate: grapefruit, fried potatoes, spinach, peanuts, cress salad, radish, beetroot, cilantro, parsley, clover, tomato, eggplant, bell pepper. Products rich in calcium: dairy products, canned fish, dried apricots, grapes, pumpkin seeds, soy, lettuce, green onions, carrots. Consumption of these products should be reduced.

4. Keep your healthy weight

Lose weight, but do it gradually. Although diets low in carbohydrates and high in protein help lose weight, the load falls on the kidneys and increases the risk of stone formation.

5. Reduce the amount of coffee you drink

Caffeine accelerates metabolism and leads to dehydration. The allowable rate of coffee for an adult is 400 mg. This is equivalent to roughly four cups of coffee. Please note that some carbonated and energy drinks, chocolate and tea also contain caffeine.

6. Avoid sweet drinks

Sweet drinks, especially corn syrup, juices rich in fructose increase the risk of stones.

7. Increase the number of citrates taken

High levels of citrate - citric acid prevents the formation of stones. Products rich in citrates: lemon or lime juice, orange juice, pumpkin, mango, some types of red pepper, apricot, pineapple.  Be sure to include these products in your daily diet.

8. Reduce the amount of products that increase acidity
