Iran puts up for sale its 19 monuments to pay off the national debt

17:26 - 8.05.2023

May 8, Fineko/abc.az. 19 objects will be put up for sale on May 22 by the Iranian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism & Crafts, ABC.AZ reports with reference to British newspaper The Times.

The list of monuments for sale also includes the oil-rich province of Khuzestan in southwestern Iran. One of the most significant structures on the list is the thousand-year-old castle of Rayen in the province of Kerman. The other is the rural residence of the Qajar Prince Nasireddin Mirza. The building was confiscated from the Prince's heirs after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, like many other buildings belonging to members of the Pahlavi and Qajar dynasties, and is currently in state ownership.

Experts believe that because of international sanctions, only the rich elite of Iran with political ties will be able to purchase the monuments for sale.
