First gas to be extracted from Absheron field in coming weeks

June 1, Fineko/abc.az. In the coming weeks, the first gas will be extracted from the Absheron gas-condensate field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

ABC.AZ reports that TotalEnergies’ Senior Vice President for Europe Jean-Luc Ghiziou said at the Baku Energy Week.

According to the vice preisdent, Azerbaijan plays an important role in gas supply to Europe.

At the initial stage, approx. 1.5 bn cu m of gas will be extracted from the field annually, and in the future – 5 bn cu m.

The Absheron field was discovered by Azerbaijani geologists in the 1960s. The reserves of the field amount to 350 bn cu m. It is the second largest gas field in the Caspian Sea after Shah Deniz field.

In 2009, a contract for Absheron field was signed between French company Total and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan. In September 2011, Total announced the discovery of large gas reserves at the field.
