Inflation and unemployment in euro area continue to decline

16:37 - 1.06.2023

June 1, Fineko/abc.az. Annual inflation in the eurozone in May decreased by 0.9 percentage points compared with the previous month, to 6.1%.

ABC.AZ reports that this is evidenced by data published on Thursday by the EU statistical office, Eurostat.

Similarly, core inflation (which excludes energy and unprocessed foods from the calculation as they are more volatile) also slowed its growth last month, from 7.3% in April to 6.9% in May.

This decrease is linked mainly with the behavior of energy carriers, whose prices fell by 1.7% in May, as well as a smaller increase in prices for food, alcohol and tobacco, which increased from 13.5% in April to 12.5% in May.

In addition, the unemployment rate in the eurozone in April decreased by 0.1 p.p. against March to 6.5%, which is a new record low, according to Eurostat.

In the EU as a whole, the unemployment rate has remained unchanged at 6% versus March. Compared with April 2022, unemployment fell by two tenths in the eurozone countries, from 6.7% to 6.5%, while in the EU-27 as a whole, the decline was one tenth, from 6.1% to 6%.
