Azerbaijani MPs ratified Caspian Sea Status Convention

February 12, Fineko/abc.az. Milli Majlis has ratified the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea.

In the course of today's plenary session first vice speaker Ziyafat Askerov stated that the Convention signed on 12 August 2018 meets the national interests of all the Caspian littoral states.

Besides, the parliamentarians approved the protocols as follows: "On cooperation in combating organized crime in the Caspian Sea", "On cooperation in combating terrorism in the Caspian Sea", "On cooperation & interaction of border agencies in the Caspian Sea", attached to the "Agreement on cooperation in the field of security in the Caspian Sea" dated 18 November 2010, the agreements “On cooperation in the transport sector between the Caspian states", "On prevention of incidents in the Caspian Sea", "On trade & economic cooperation between the Caspian states".

Convention on Legal Status of the Caspian Sea was signed by the five Caspian states (Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan) in the Kazakh city of Aktau on 12 August 2018.

The Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea is unlimited.

The Convention contains provisions relating to the procedure for the settlement of disputes of the member states, the principles of their cooperation, the procedure for determining the boundary of territorial waters in the Caspian Sea, the delimitation of the seabed and subsoil, the establishment of a fishing zone. Shipping issues, including warships and submarines, are also regulated in details. Several more articles are devoted to economic activities and environmental protection of the Caspian Sea, as well as the fight against terrorism and organized crime.
