May 18, Fineko/abc.az. To date, cotton companies have signed about 20,000 contracts with farmers for growing cotton on an area of 99,693 hectares.

ABC.AZ was informed at the Ministry of Agriculture that plowing was carried out on 99,180 hectares and cotton seeds were sown on 97,988 hectares until 18 May.

Azerbaijan expects to plant cotton in 21 districts this year. Among the traditional cotton-growing areas the Saatli (13,720 ha), Barda (11,300 ha), Bilasuvar (10,553 ha), Agjabedi (10,320 ha), and Sabirabad (9,551 ha) districts are the most cotton sown.

Last year the country collected 294,000 tons of cotton and the average yield was 29.4 centners per hectare. In accord with the new subsidy mechanism, which is in effect from 2020, the cotton growers will be granted for the first time a subsidy for both planting and harvest. Farmers will receive a subsidy of 220 manats for each hectare of sown area and 100 manats for each ton of cotton transferred to the cotton points.
