Azerbaijan`s Ombudsman appeals to international organizations in connection with BTC pipe attack

October 7, Fineko/abc.az. Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva addressed the international community and international organizations in connection with the shelling of the main export oil pipeline Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) by the Armenian armed forces. The attack was carried out with prohibited cluster bombs.

The appeal reads: "Starting from 27 September 2020 the Armenian armed forces have been intensively shelling settlements, social and strategic objects in Azerbaijan. The civilian population of Azerbaijan is also being shelled. Armenia uses heavy artillery, aircrafts, missile systems and prohibited weapons. As a result of the shelling, Azerbaijani civilians are killed, there are injured, and serious damage has been done to homes, historical and cultural monuments, administrative buildings, shopping centers and other social facilities.

From 6 October 2020 till 23 pm the Armenian occupiers conducted a massive shelling of Yevlakh district of Azerbaijan, where the civilian population lives, and the BTC oil pipeline runs through its territory. The shelling of the territory far from the combat zone was conducted with cluster bombs. They fell 10 meters from the BTC pipeline.

Main export oil pipeline BTC is of exceptional strategic importance in the context of economic, political, and energy security not only of Azerbaijan, but also of Georgia, Turkey, the entire region, as well as European and world states.

Another war crime committed by Armenia is a crime not only against the Azerbaijani state, but also against regional countries and the whole of Europe," the statement says.
