Today, Azerbaijan marks the 95th birth anniversary of Heydar Aliyev

May 10, Fineko/abc.az. Today, Azerbaijan marks the 95th birthday anniversary of the late national leader Heydar Aliyev.

Heydar Aliyev was born in Nakhchyvan city of Azerbaijan on 10 May 1923.

The late president served as Chairman of the KGB under the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1966-1969, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1969-1982, member of the Politburo of the CPSU since 1982, First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, and Major General. In 1987, he resigned from his post. He returned to Azerbaijan in July 1990 and was first elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR, Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan AR (1991-1993), then President of Azerbaijan (1993-2003).

Heydar Aliyev died in Cleveland clinic in the United States on 12 December 2003.
