The number of tourists coming to Azerbaijan is growing every year.

According to the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Abulfas Garayev, in 2016 the influx of tourists rose 11.7% over 2015 and 2.248 million foreign citizens visited the country.

"In January-August, the increase in the influx of tourists was 23.1% to 1.818 million people and this is a positive trend," the minister said.

According to him, the growth is also observed in regional tourism, where 860,000 places were booked in hotels in the season (June-July-August), and 1.294 million places from the beginning of the year as a whole.

"During the reporting period, the volume of transactions carried out by foreign citizens also increased by 97%, and purchases were made for AZN 713,000,000. This is almost a twofold increase and a real contribution to the economy of the country," the minister said.

Abulfas Garayev also said that 2.7 million foreign citizens are expected to arrive in the country by the end of 2017.

"In the first half of the year, foreigners who came to Azerbaijan spent $ 1.3 bn, but Azerbaijanis traveling abroad left only $ 1.2 bn in foreign countries, eventually forming a surplus of $ 100 mln," the minister said.
