The beginning of the attack on Azerbaijan has been announced in Georgia fight off the monastic complex David-Gareji. Earlier, in the process of negotiations on the delimitation of the Azerbaijani-Georgian border, Georgia raised a claim for the complex.

On Friday, scandal broke out in Georgia because of changes in the route of patrol of the Azerbaijani border guards. Church which is quite strong in the country and the "public" stated of the seizure of monastery Udabno (pat of the complex) by Azerbaijan. It became the subject of telephone conversations between the Foreign Ministers Elmaroi Mammadyarov of Azerbaijan and Grigol Vashadze of Georgia, who agreed to discuss the question in Chicago, where both will be next week within the NATO summit.

Without waiting for the outcome of negotiations, Georgia announced about the use of Georgian traditional tactics towards Azerbaijan - the "public marches" in the disputed territory. Georgia’s conflicts with areas, known as Abkhazia and South Ossetia, began from precisely such marches.

Certain priest Kirion declared that at noon on 21 May in the David-Gareji up to 100 priests and 5,000 pilgrims will march demanding the return of the right of access to monastery Udabno. "When we are told that it is the territory of Azerbaijan, it is shameful for the entire Georgian nation," Kirion said.

The prospects of the procession was not influenced the statement of the same Kirion that Azerbaijani border guards returned to positions held before 6 May. Now, Georgian border guards do not allow tourists and pilgrims to Udabno.

Already tomorrow the march of protest in defense of the monastery of David-Gareji on the border with Azerbaijan will be held in Tbilisi. A group named "Protect David-Gareji" has been set up to mobilizes citizens for this action, as well as in protest against the statements of Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze and Minister of Culture & Monument Protection Niki Rurua, who recognized the claims of Azerbaijan on the part of the unique monastic complex of VI century (Azerbaijan proved that the complex has an Albanian origin - Caucasian Albania is one of the centers of formation of Azerbaijani statehood, the first Christian country in the world; note of abc.az). They demand to publish until 31 May when the feast day of Saint David Gareji is marked, all materials of talks with Azerbaijan on this issue. During the procession there will be organized pickets nearby the Embassy of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. Protest actions will continue in the next few days.

Today many people do not remember, but Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno Garabagh conflict, which led to the occupation of 20% of Azerbaijani territory and 1 million refugees in Azerbaijan, began in late 1987 from marches of self-proclaimed movement "Krunk" in Yerevan, initially under the cultural and religious slogans. The result of work of the “Krunk” intellectuals was the expulsion of at least 250,000 Azerbaijanis, Kurds, and even more from Russians from still then Soviet Armenia.
