Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan keeps on observing growing tendency of human immunodeficient virus (HIV) spread, started some years ago.

The Ministry of Health informs that from 1987 to 1st December 2009 the country registered 2,224 HIV-infected persons.

“Of them 2,138 (96.1%) HIV-infected are Azeri citizens and 86 (3.9%) are foreigners.  1,799 (84.1%) and 339 (15.9%) out of the local HIV-infected are males and females respectively. Number of persons who died of AIDS for this period reached 274. Disease of 448 HIV-infected persons who are Azerbaijani citizens entered the stage of AIDS,” the Ministry reports.

As a result, since 1st July of 2009 it was registered 190 HIV infections and 14 deaths.

The major part of disease contamination for the reported period occurred following use of infectious syringes used for drugs.

“63.3% of the HIV newly-infected persons contaminated themselves after use of infectious syringes for the last 11 months of 2009. And since 1992 the figure made 64.4%,” it was reported.

By the 2nd quarter of 2009 the country registered 2,034 facts of AIDS infection (1,956 are Azerbaijani citizens), and rate of the persons who died of this disease was 260 persons.

HIV/AIDS epidemics has become wide-scale. The Health Ministry with Global Fund support is ongoing free-of-charge of treatment anti-tetrovirus (ARV) preparations in the Anti-AIDS Centre.

By the present 310 HIV-infected persons have been drawn to treatment in Azerbaijan.

According to World Health Organization’s data, up to 6,800 persons became HIV-infected daily around the world.
