Milli Majlis speaker: 500,000 Azerbaijanis and Turks became victims of genocide carried out by Armenians for centuries

Baku, Fineko/ The Azerbaijani parliament held today a special plenary session devoted to the memory of victims of genocide of Azerbaijanis committed in February 1992 in the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly by Armenian invaders with the support of the 366th Regiment of the former Soviet Army.

At the meeting speaker Ogtay Asadov has stated that Khojaly genocide was the result of policy of ethnic cleansing carried out by Armenians for centuries.

"The tragedy of Khojaly is a new bloody page in the history and politics of ethnic cleansing in the South Caucasus and Eastern Europe. Armenian policy of ethnic cleansing has a century history, and during this period the Armenians killed 500,000 Azerbaijanis and Turks. As a result of Armenian occupation, 1 million Azerbaijanis became refugees and seven Azerbaijani districts have been occupied," Asadov said.

He added that in spite of all this, Azerbaijan hopes that the country’s territorial integrity will be restored and the people who realized the genocide will be punished for their deeds.

"Azerbaijan is a regional leader, and Armenia cannot compare itself with Azerbaijan. Along with that all international organizations and countries around the world support Azerbaijan, and this also strengthens the position of our country. President Ilham Aliyev once claimed that although we want to resolve this conflict peacefully, if the Armenian side does not agree, then we will look for other solutions. Armenia will be sorry that it does not agree to our terms and conditions," the speaker said.
