U.S. proposes investment strategy to Azerbaijan, while latter suggests abolition of Jackson-Vanik and #907 amendments
Baku, Fineko/abc.az. The 3rd session of the Azerbaijani-American Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation has been held in Washington. The Ministry of Finance of Azerbaijan reports that the session was presided by Finance Minister Samir Sharifov and U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy & Environment at the U.S. Department of State Robert Hormats. The American co-chair emphasized availability of an interest in investing some areas of the economy of Azerbaijan and the need for the countrys national investment strategy. Sharifov, in turn, called Amendment 907 adopted in October to the Freedom Support Act a factor constraining bilateral relationships and raised the question of its abolition in a situation when Azerbaijan and the U.S. are strategic partners. He also raised the issue of cancellation of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment adopted towards the USSR, which discriminates Azerbaijan, the U.S. strategic partner in the field of security and energy. Mr. Hormats pointed out that the Department of State raised the issue before Congress and hopes to remedy the situation.
