Azerbaijan takes up presidency duties in UN Security Council
Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan’s presidency in the UN Security Council has started today. The country is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan informs that Azerbaijan fulfill presidency functions in the UN Security Council for one month. During the period of its presidency Azerbaijan will put forward for discussion within the agenda of the Security Council the processes occurring in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans, including such issues as peace and international security, the fight against terrorism and conflict settlement. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev emphasized: "We will defend and protect in the Security Council first of all international law and justice". Being the Security Council chairman, Azerbaijan, as the country which has suffered from terrorism, plans to hold a high-level meeting on the theme "Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist attacks". Azerbaijan also plans to hold meetings on various issues relating to discussion of the major problems the international community faces. Azerbaijan was elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2012/13 on 24 October 2011. Tags: UN , Security Council Related news
