Staff revolution: ethnic Asian heads EBRD first time
Baku, Fineko/abc.az. The Board of Governors of the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development has carried out a staff revolution – for the first time the British subject has become the EBRD President and for the first time he is ethnic Asian.
All previous EBRD presidents represented France and Germany and were “classic” French and Germans.
Nevertheless, yesterday the EBRD Board of Governors elected Sir Suma Chakrabarti as President of the EBRD for the next four years, from July 3, 2012. He replaces Thomas Mirow, the President since 2008.
The new president who is going to leave the chair in the British Justice Ministry has already stated that he will work for solution of challenges “we encounter”.
For that Sir Suma has long experience. Prior to taking his position at the Ministry of Justice he headed the UK’s Department of International Development. He played a key role developing the UKs successful Know-How Fund for Central and Eastern Europe. After studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Oxford, he took a Masters in Development Economics at the University of Sussex and worked with the European Commission in improving its programs in the Middle East and North Africa.
