NATO sends AWACS air scouts to Azerbaijan

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan’s participation for ensuring cargo supplies for coalition troops in Afghanistan acquires new character.

Araz Azimov, deputy foreign minister of Azerbaijan, has claimed in Baku today that currently NATO expects to send reconnaissance aircrafts (Boeing 707 AWACS) to Afghanistan.

“Negotiations on the issue are being conducted with Azerbaijan as well. The Azerbaijani party does not refute this proposal. But this matter depends not only on Azerbaijan alone, but on all countries above territory of which this route runs through – from Turkey to Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. And if the issue fails to find solution with one of these countries, there are no grounds to blame Azerbaijan for that,” Azimov added.

Simultaneously the deputy minister refuted the accusations that official Baku allegedly did not permit the NATO planes to fly to Afghanistan through its territory.

“Thousands of planes fly through Azerbaijan in direction to Afghanistan. The NATO countries apply to Azerbaijan for permission for flight through its territory at any moment, receive it and carry out these flights. In my view, there appear no problems in these issues,” Azimov said.
