Opposition media receive lump-sum aid from State Budget of Azerbaijan

Baku, Fineko / abc.az. In connection with the 135th anniversary of the national press, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev issued a range of decrees in favor of employees of the media.

By a decree on measures to strengthen social protection of Azerbaijan press personnel President Aliyev ordered to allocate AZN 5 million from the Presidential Reserve Fund of State Budget 2010 for improvement of living conditions of the media personnel and the construction of houses for them. The Ministry of Finance was charged with transfer the finances to the Fund of State Support for the Media under the President.

By another decree the President ordered to allocate AZN 280,000 from the Reserve Fund for celebration of the national press anniversary and AZN 1 million as lump-sum aid to the media. As a result, assistance will be given to 32 papers and eight news agencies. The newspapers will be financed by AZN 20,000 and the agencies by AZN 10,000. Among the beneficiaries and the opposition media are newspapers Azadliq (Freedom), Xalq Cebhesi (Popular Front), Yeni Musavat (New Musavat – an organ of party Musavat (Equality) and news agency Turan. In these ranks is also oldest independent agency ASSA-Irada, established by Irada Vekilova on 19 August 1991.
