Azerbaijan and Syria create working group on gas supplies which to be begun not earlier than end of 2011

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has started preparation for natural gas supplies to Syria. In order to organize them, a delegation, headed by Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Power Engineering, visited Damascus.

The  SOCAR Vice President Elshad Nasirov said that  the parties agreed in the held meetings to create a working group for preparation for start of Azerbaijani gas supplies to Syria.

“The working group will consider technical, commercial and other issues, related to export. At present, the question is delivery of about 1 billion cu m per annum. In order to have technical opportunity to begin the supplies, 150- kilometer gas pipeline should be built between Syria and Turkey and 90 km of its length falls on Syrian territory. Building of the gas pipeline should be finished by the end of 2011,” E. Nasirov told.

Earlier, there were expectations concerning  beginning of deliveries by the end of 2010. The idea of Azerbaijan gas import was stated by Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, when he paid a visit to Azerbaijan in 2009.
