Over 72% of Azerbaijan’s libraries are located in villages

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. In the 1st half of 2009 Azerbaijani libraries received 4.8 million book issue applications.

The Sate Statistics Committee informs that out of 8,507 libraries around the country, 27.3% (2,322 libraries) are located in cities and 72.7% (6,185) in villages.

“50.7% of libraries relate to the Ministry of Education, 46.6% to Ministry of Culture & Tourism, and rest 2.7% to other agencies. The library fund contains 65.5% of books in Azeri, 31.1% in Russian, 2% in English and 1.4% in other languages. Moreover, 71.9% of books in Azeri were printed with use of Latin alphabet and 28.1% with use of Cyrillic alphabet,” the Committee reported.

For the past half of the year it was used 53.4 million books and other printed materials.

The surveys were conducted in compliance with the State Programme of Library & Information  Development for 2008-13.
