Over 72% of Azerbaijan’s libraries are located in villages
Baku, Fineko/abc.az. In the 1st half of 2009 Azerbaijani libraries received 4.8 million book issue applications. The Sate Statistics Committee informs that out of 8,507 libraries around the country, 27.3% (2,322 libraries) are located in cities and 72.7% (6,185) in villages. “50.7% of libraries relate to the Ministry of Education, 46.6% to Ministry of Culture & Tourism, and rest 2.7% to other agencies. The library fund contains 65.5% of books in Azeri, 31.1% in Russian, 2% in English and 1.4% in other languages. Moreover, 71.9% of books in Azeri were printed with use of Latin alphabet and 28.1% with use of Cyrillic alphabet,” the Committee reported. For the past half of the year it was used 53.4 million books and other printed materials.
