Azerbaijan announced tender for consultant to make EIA and feasibility study of extension of Baku sewage runoff line

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Within the World Bank Urban Water Supply & Sanitation Project II in Azerbaijan it was announced selection of the consultant for making environment impact assessment (EIA) and feasibility study of the project on extension of Baku sewage runoff line from an aeration plant based in Govsani district of Baku to the Caspian Sea.

Azersu OJSC (Azerbaijan State Water Company) reports that the consultant is to undertake making of the project feasibility study and EIA.

Deadline for the applicants is August 14, 2008 at the address: 67, Heydar Aliyev Avenue, Baku.

Peter Thomson, WB director for stable development in Caucasus and Central Asia who visited Baku last week, estimates that expenditures on upgrade of sewage system, including system of aeration and sewage runoff, total $800 million - $1 bn. The evaluation of the project and size of WB participation in project financing have not been conducted.

60% of the Project budget will be directed for watersupply and the balance for water. WBG is to finance $190 million, including $160 million through International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and $30 million through International Development Association (IDA).  The Azerbaijani party will finance another $60 million.

Project II will cover 5 regions in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 6 regions in the south of Azerbaijan and another 10 regions not covered by watersupply modernization project.

The credit agreement on Project I was signed on August 17. In period until 2012 WBG endorsed disbursal of a $230 million credit through the International Bank for Reconstruction & Development for the $310 million watersupply project in small cities of Azerbaijan. The project consists of three components: regional investment policy (20 regions), regional development plan for Greater Baku, upgrade of infrastructure and structural changes in project loan borrower Azersu (Azerbaijan State Water Company). Originally the project covered Agstafa, Bilasuvar, Geranboy, Gabala, Guba, Khanlar, Oguz, Saatli, Tovuz, Zagatala, Hajigabul, Gakh, Mingechevir, Samukh, Shamkir, Terter, Gazakh, Sabirabad and the Sharur and Babek regions of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Then Shemakha and Khirdalan became the project additional participants.
