June 21, Fineko/abc.az. For the first time a man set foot on the ice of Antarctica in 1820, and since then this continent has been considered one of the most mysterious corners of the world. Unusual rumors were spread about the secret military base of the Third Reich, the missing expeditions and even aliens…

And what really this continent hides under a thick layer of ice?

Mysterious ancient meteorite

In 2015, NASA scientists discovered in Antarctica a meteorite at the age of 13,000 years. It turned out that he fell from the Mars and microbes that belong to the red planet still live in its composition.

Bones of elongated skulls

During excavations in an area of Antarctica called Lapal the bones of elongated skulls have been discovered. This finding stunned the whole world. The reason for that was not so much the shape of the skull as the place of discovery. So, before this discovery it was believed that the human foot had never entered Antarctica before.

Dinosaur remains

In the early 1990s, scientists found remains of dinosaurs in Antarctica. According to archaeologists, the age of these remains is more than 200 million years. This fact indicates that warm climate dominated in Antarctica before.

Pyramids

On the territory of Antarctica there are pyramids similar to Egyptian ones. This fact gives a reason to assume that a special protocivilization formed once in Antarctica, which hence spread throughout the world.

Fossilized remains

In 2009, archaeologists found the remains of a strange egg-laying creature, frozen and petrified in the ice. The size of this creature was like a modern cat. Scientists believe that this creature is likely to have migrated from Africa to Antarctica during global warming.

Blood waterfall

Amazing liquid of blood-red color flows from the Taylor glacier. Iron oxide 2, contained in water in large quantities gives red color to the waterfall. A source of water is an ice-covered lake, which is located at a distance of several kilometers. The water in the Blood Waterfall never freezes, because the salinity of its water exceeds the salinity of ordinary sea water by four times.

Scary creature

In Antarctica, American researchers found the remains of a terrible creature at depth of 342 m. It does not look like any of the creatures that have been known to mankind so far. The protruding jaw, the body, covered with protruding bones and unnatural body structure puzzled scientists.

Lake under the glacier

For the first time researchers discovered an underground lake at depth of 700 m of Ross glacier. Later it was found out that the number of such lakes in Antarctica is more than 140. Freezing of lakes occurs due to geothermal flows of the mantle. Under a dense layer of ice, where light never penetrates, cold-resistant bacteria were found, not known to science.

Dry valley

The driest climate on the Earth is observed in Antarctica - in the Dry Valley. For almost two million years, this valley has not been rainfed. The reason for the dryness of the climate is winds blowing at speed of 320 km/h. In connection with extreme climate here NASA is testing their devices ‘Viking’.
