Halitosis (bad breath) and its causes

July 03, Fineko/abc.az. Halitosis is a medical term for bad breath. Halitosis worries a person constantly or periodically, for example, with an empty stomach or after a meal.  Halitosis may occur in case of tooth diseases and various disorders of internal organs.

Causes of halitosis

* Caries and its complications (pulpitis, periodontitis, etc)

* Inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa

• Pathology of ENT-organs (sinusitis, laryngitis, tracheitis, rhinitis)

* Dry mouth - a small amount of saliva leads to violation of self-cleaning function of the oral cavity and rapid growth of bacteria.

• Breathing through the mouth causes drying of the mucous membrane of the mouth and unpleasant smell.

* Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract

* Parasites (worm infestations)

* Respiratory tract infections-lung abscess, bronchiectasis

* Improper oral hygiene

* Improper care of dental structures (bridge, prosthesis)

• Diabetes mellitus (acetone smell)

* Renal insufficiency (fish smell)

* Liver failure.

* Bad habits - smoking, alcohol, as well as gastronomic preferences (food flavored with onion and garlic, excessive eating at one time) 

* Some medications

•     Hunger

•     Stress

What to do?

After each meal, brush your teeth. Remove food residues left in the interdental spaces. If you use prostheses, it should be paid even more attention to that. Drink more water. Visit your dentist at least twice a year. If the cause of halitosis is diseases of the internal organs, be sure to contact the appropriate specialist.
