Justice and interior ministers of EU Trio Presidency and Eastern Partnership convene for informal meeting on combating corruption

July 17, Fineko/abc.az. The ministers responsible for justice and home affairs of the European Union and their counterparts from the Eastern Partnership countries have convened in Innsbruck on 13 July 2018 for an informal meeting on fight against corruption.

They focused their discussions on the promotion of the rule of law and the fight against corruption within security and judicial authorities.

Azerbaijan`s delegation at the meeting was led by Justice Minister Fikrat Mammadov.

In his remarks, Minister of Justice Fikrat Mammadov emphasized President Ilham Aliyev`s political will to combat corruption, pointing out to the improvement of legislation in this field. He underlined the successful reforms carried out in the country’s judicial system, as well as election of judges which is highly appreciated by the Council of Europe and the European Union as the most transparent process.

Mammadov underlined the effectiveness of the ASAN service centers, saying that these centers are designed to form up a new approach towards ensuring the citizens’ satisfaction in functioning of civil servants in relation to the population and to enrich the quality of relations between state servants and citizens. He also hailed the effective cooperation between Azerbaijan and the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) based in Laxenburg (Vienna), Austria.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed the establishment of effective measurement of progress in the fight against corruption and presented the most relevant measures undertaken in the field of supervision and enforcement of their countries’ anti-corruption legislation, in line with the “European Standards”.

The ministers reaffirmed their joint commitment to strengthen the rule of law and anti corruption mechanisms, as agreed at the Eastern Partnership Summit in November 2017. In this context, the ministers emphasized that the fight against corruption and implementation of public administration reforms are of crucial importance for promoting good governance at all levels and increasing public confidence in national and local institutions.

Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Ismat Aliyev was also present at the meeting.
