July 25, Fineko/abc.az. Aromatic extracts of plants were widely used for therapeutic, cosmetic and other purposes in Ancient Greece, Babylon, China, Arabia, and India.

The ancient Egyptians widely used plant extracts for disinfection of premises and during ceremonies in the church. The Greeks, borrowing the technique of obtaining plant extracts from the Egyptians, further improved it and found a soothing, relaxing, invigorating, refreshing effect of essential oils.

Term "aromatherapy" was first introduced in 1928 by French chemist Gattefosse. He studied the antiseptic, antiviral, and wound-healing effect of essential oils.

Nowadays, aromatherapy is used almost in all areas of medicine.

Experts have revealed that calm, relaxation or, conversely, cheerfulness, and mood enhancement are obtained as a result of irritation of the olfactory receptors during inhalation of essential oils, depending on the type of essential oil.

When applied topically, they have strong therapeutic effect, for a short time being absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes. Massage with aromatic oils has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, relaxes muscles, prevents cellulite, improves skin tone and elasticity, and has calming effect. Baths with essential oils can be used both for soothing and cosmetic purposes.
