Heads of railway companies of Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan sign a tripartite Memo of Cooperation

May 7, Fineko/abc.az. The heads of the railway companies of Russia, Turkey and Azerbaijan signed in Ankara a trilateral Memorandum of Cooperation in the development of rail transport in Ankara.

Russian Railways OJSC (RZD) informs that the signatures under the document were put by RZD’s General Director and Chairman of the Board Oleg Belozerov, Turkish State Railways’ Director General Uygun Ali Iskhan and Azerbaijani Railways CJSC (ADY) chairman Javid Gurbanov.

"The Memo provides for joint actions to ensure regular rail transport via Baku–Tbilisi–Kars route, including the establishment of economically justified tariffs and the attraction of a new cargo base," RZD said in a statement.

For this purpose, the parties will consider the possibility of implementing a project on construction of a second railway track with a gauge of 1520 mm on section Akhalkalaki (Georgia) – Kars with length of 76 km on the territory of Turkey and a terminal & logistics center in Kars.

"The signed Memo opens the way to the development of transportation via Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line, which is now being built under the leadership of Azerbaijani railway workers. It means that Turkey is connected to the common technological space of the railways of the former USSR, as well as Finland, Bulgaria and Iran, working in constant close cooperation with each other," Belozerov stated at the signing ceremony.

He emphasized that already today annual carriages between Russia and Turkey reaches 6 million tons of cargo via direct route and 20 million tons with the use of different types of transport, including the railway.

"At the same time, Baku–Tbilisi–Kars corridor will also transport cargo from Transsib, sent from the Republic of Korea, China and other Pacific Rim countries," Belozerov added.

According to RZD head, the further development of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars corridor will create in the near future the conditions for the organization of regular container traffic and on the permanent basis will include Turkey in the system of Eurasian transport corridors, new goods will go along the branch, and the new opportunities for development of international logistics will appear.
