Azerbaijan marks 96th birth anniversary of late president Heydar Aliyev

May 10, Fineko/abc.az. Today, Azerbaijan is marking the 96th birth anniversary of the late president Heydar Aliyev - the architect and creator of modern independent Azerbaijan, an outstanding statesman, brilliant son and national leader of the Azerbaijani people.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, their family members, relatives and friends of the great leader came to the Alley of Honor to visit the grave of the national leader.

Heydar Alirza oglu Aliyev was born in the Azerbaijani city of Nakhchivan on 10 May 1923.

In 1969, at the July Plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev was nominated as the first Secretary of the Central Committee of the CP of Azerbaijan and became the head of the Republic. In December 1982, Heydar Aliyev was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, appointed to the post of First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers and became one of the leaders of the Soviet Union. For 20 years, Heydar Aliyev was an MP of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, five years served as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

In October 1987, Heydar Aliyev resigned from his post in protest against the policy pursued by the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

After his return to Azerbaijan in July 1990, Heydar Aliyev lived first in Baku and then in Nakhchivan, and in the same year he was elected to the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan. In 1991-1993 he served as Chairman of the Supreme Mejlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan. At the constituent congress of Yeni Azerbaijan Party held in Nakhchivan in 1992, Heydar Aliyev was elected chairman of the Party.

On 15 June 1993 Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan, and on 24 July by the resolution of the Milli Majlis he began to exercise the powers of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On 3 October 1993 Heydar Aliyev was elected President of Azerbaijan. On 11 October 1998 he was re-elected the President of Azerbaijan. Heydar Aliyev, who agreed to stand for election in the presidential election held on 15 October 2003 refused to participate in the election due to health problems.

On 12 December the national leader of Azerbaijan President Heydar Aliyev died in the Cleveland clinic in the United States.
