July 9, Fineko/abc.az. A tourist tax initiative has been put forward in Georgia.

ABC.AZ reports with reference to the Georgian press that this proposal was made by Shalva Alaverdashvili, the head of the Azerbaijan Hotel & Restaurant Federation.

According to Alaverdashvili, this is the only tool to save the tourism sector of Georgia.

Federation’s head believes that the tax should not exceed 1-2 euro a day: "Currently, the debt of the tourism sector of Georgia is 4.5 bn lari (1.30 bn euro). Out of this amount, 3 bn lari (867 million euro) accounts for legal entities and 1.5 billion lari (433 million euro) for individuals working in the tourism sector. No one will be able to pay this amount until January 2021."

Alaverdashvili said that a tourist stays in Tbilisi for an average of 3.5-4 days: "If 2 million tourists a year come to the city, then you can easily collect 7 million euro from taxes."
