September 4, Fineko/abc.az. Work is underway in Azerbaijan on the creation of drought-resistant, high-yielding wheat varieties, ABC.AZ quotes Faig Khudaev, the director of the Research Institute of Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture.
He noted that the formation of the variety as a full-fledged one, its zoning, integration into the farm cost 15 years: "This does not allow us to meet the demand amid the global climate change that is happening in the world. For example, the work we started in 2023 on the creation of varieties will last until 2035."
Khudaev believes that currently the main goal is to create drought-resistant varieties with short growing season: "Our scientific research in this direction continues. Since the number of sunny days in the ripening phase of the plant is more scorching, that is, 40-50 degrees, during the growing season the plant is stressed, and there are problems with maturation. We strive to create new varieties with a short growing season, capable of completing a full maturation cycle by mid-June."
