December 19, Fineko/abc.az. EU countries have destroyed at least 215 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for €4 bn because of their uselessness, ABC.AZ reports with reference to newspaper Politico.

Overproduction of vaccines, released in total in the amount of 1.5 billion doses, "has led to the fact that many of them ended up in landfills across the continent",” the paper says.

A significant number of unclaimed vaccines were purchased in 2021 at the height of the pandemic, when Brussels signed the largest contracts for the supply of 1.1 billion doses with American company Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech.

Politico points out that "attempts to transfer excess doses of vaccines to third countries have been problematic due to falling demand and logistical problems".
