March 13, Fineko/abc.az. In order to expand production in Azerbaijan and achieve savings in water use, it is necessary to systematically control water, ABC.AZ reports, quoting Agriculture Minister Majnun Mammadov as saying this at a conference in Baku.
"Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture is working with the State Agency for Water Resources on 5 articles as a concept. First, with regard to water management, we must collect water wherever possible in the country and with agriculture-oriented water management. It is necessary to create large reservoirs and restore old ones.
Secondly, the transportation of water should be carried out as much as possible on closed transport. This is important to reduce water loss from the source to the site. Where this is not possible, mainly in low-lying areas, ground channels should be concreted.
Thirdly, the network inside the site should be switched to 100% closed. The first reason for this is the creation of water pressure. This will create an opportunity for the farmer to use managed irrigation systems. The use of such systems, in turn, means increased productivity and water savings.
Fourth, it is necessary to know the volume of water used by each farmer.
Finally, fifthly, all this should be planned throughout the country. Farmers should be provided with preliminary information - how much water is in which source, how much land is provided with water under this source, what is the need for water for crops. All this needs to be systematically planned," Mammadov said.
