April 8, Fineko/abc.az. A new international airport will be built in Tbilisi.

ABC.AZ reports that Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said about this at today's session of the government.

"A completely new, state-of-the-art airport will appear in Tbilisi in a few years," he said.

According to Kobakhidze, the Economic Council held a meeting yesterday at which a decision was made on this project. The airport capacity amounts to nearly 4-4.5 million passengers today.

In the future, a rapid and consistent increase in visitors is expected, which should be facilitated by infrastructure.

"We considered two alternative options. One involved the expansion of the old airport, and the other involved the construction of a new airport in Vaziani. Expenses for the expansion were supposed to be about $900 million. And the cost of building a new airport is about $1.26 bn," he noted.

The construction of the new airport will make it possible to accommodate up to 19 million passengers.

According to Kobakhidze, the new airport will fully comply with the highest modern standards.
