July 29, Fineko/abc.az. Mitsubishi Motors will join the alliance of Honda and Nissan – the second and third largest automakers in Japan – amid the increased competition between Japanese companies with Chinese and American ones.
ABC.AZ reports that Honda and Nissan signed an all-round cooperation agreement in March 2024.
Mitsubishi will join the alliance, and the three companies will work together. It is alleged that Mitsubishi Motors signed a non-disclosure agreement with Honda and Nissan and began negotiations.
The companies intend to standardize the software of cars: it is expected that Nissan and Honda will develop the basic software, as well as consider its use in Mitsubishi cars.
Automakers will also discuss the possibility of complementing each other's model ranges.
Following the financial year ended in March 2024, Honda sold 4.1 million vehicles worldwide, and Honda – 3.44 million. Mitsubishi Motors had sales of 810,000 cars.
Toyota, the largest Japanese automaker, is also engaged in creating alliances in the country. The company has already teamed up with Daihatsu, Suzuki, Subaru, Mazda and Hino Motors, bringing the combined sales of the five companies to 16 million cars.
The desire of Japanese automakers to unite is linked with the efforts and significant funds that Tesla and Chinese automakers are investing in electric vehicles. Japanese manufacturers cannot compete with them in terms of scale and supply chain.
