August 1, Fineko/abc.az. The Republic of Türkiye may open the border with neighboring Armenia while normalizing relations between that country and Azerbaijan.

ABC.AZ reports that this was announced by Turkish FM Hakan Fidan.

"The negotiation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia continues. We need to prepare our scenario in case of its positive completion, and work is underway in this direction. If the normalization process is completed, we will activate a positive scenario, that is, we can open our gates at the border," the Turkish minister told Sabah newspaper.

Special Representatives of Türkiye and Armenia Serdar Kilic and Ruben Rubinyan held a meeting on the border of the two countries on July 30, confirming their intention to continue the process of normalization of bilateral relations without preconditions.

Despite the common border, there are no diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Armenia. In 2009, in Zurich, the FMs of the two states signed protocols on the establishment of diplomatic relations and principles of mutual relations, but they were not ratified by the parties. On March 1, 2018, Yerevan announced the cancellation of the protocols. In 2021, Türkiye and Armenia appointed special representatives on settlement issues. Türkiye has repeatedly linked the normalization of relations with Armenia with the conclusion of a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan.
