August 30, Fineko/abc.az. ISFA LLC, a resident of the Yevlakh pilot agropark under the management of the Economic Zones Development Agency (IZIA), will establish Azerbaijan's first pistachio orchard, Samir Kheirbekov, the founder and director of the LLC, said, ABC.AZ reports.
He stated that pistachio seedlings will be planted on UCB-1 rootstock in November of this year. These rootstock plants from the US allow for harvesting in a shorter time frame. While regular pistachio seedlings typically bear fruit after 9-10 years, seedlings planted on UCB-1 rootstocks start bearing fruit after 3 years.
Currently, there are 10,000 ready pistachio seedlings that can be planted on an area of about 30 hectares. This year, a new pistachio orchard will be established on 20 hectares of the agropark using these seedlings, and the seedlings intended for the remaining 10 hectares will be sold to other farmers.
Kheirbekov noted that currently, due to the lack of local production, Azerbaijan imports pistachios, which are considered an expensive product. The orchard's harvest can be exported in the future, as well as satisfy domestic demand.
