Rabobank: Meat production and consumption in EU to decrease

16:45 - 6.09.2024

September 6, Fineko/abc.az. The growing demands on animal welfare are contributing to a reduction in meat consumption and production, which will continue in the coming years.

ABC.AZ reports that this forecast was published by Rabobank.

Pork consumption has been slowly decreasing by 0.6% per year over the past 10 years, and beef by 0.1%. Poultry meat consumption, on the contrary, increased by 1.1%. Total meat consumption in the EU and the UK grew by 0.1% annually.

Beef and pork are expected to continue to fall in price. Poultry farming is also under pressure due to the growing demands on animal welfare. Over the next 5 to 10 years, these requirements will lead to a decrease in poultry meat production.

A decline in meat production will lead not only to a reduction in exports, but also domestic consumption, including poultry meat. If poultry farms are not allowed to increase the area, then increasing welfare requirements will lead to a 40% drop in production.
