September 11, Fineko/abc.az. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has published a report on crypto fraud for 2023, according to which Americans lost $5.6 billion due to cryptocurrency scams.

This is 45% more than last year, ABC.AZ reports with a link to CoinMarketCap.

Cryptocurrency complaints accounted for 10% of all appeals to the FBI, but they accounted for almost half of the total financial losses, which underscores the seriousness of the problem.

Among the 69,000 complaints of crypto fraud, the most common victims were people over the age of 60, who lost almost $1.6 billion. The main part of the fraud — about 71% — was made up of investment schemes, while fraud through call centers and simulation of public services accounted for about 10%.

FBI Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations James Barnacle warned that the chances of recovering funds lost through crypto kiosks are "very small." He also said that of the 3,000 people notified by the FBI that they were victims of fraud, 75% did not know that they had been deceived.
