November 6, Fineko/abc.az. Armenian Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan announced the work on the smooth termination of the use of the name "Armenian cognac". Instead, the authorities intend to register the brand "Armenian brandy".

ABC.AZ reports that the minister said that the EU will monitor the use of the new cognac name and help in the development of capacities.

"Moreover, in the process of rebranding cognac, the key point is that the Armenian brandy with a new name should be registered as a geographical indication, have clear standards, clear production, quality control and control mechanisms that Armenian brandy producers should obey, who will use the new geographical indication," Papoyan said during the discussion the Law on State Budget 2025 in the parliament.

At the end of October, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called for the abandonment of the name "cognac" in the production of this drink in the country. He believes that "it is not respectable to appropriate the intangible value of another", because cognac is produced in France. According to the PM, "we need to think about something around the name ‘brandy’".
