Baltic states intend to create an energy union

16:51 - 6.11.2024

November 6, Fineko/abc.az. The authorities of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are discussing the possibility of creating a single center that will manage the electricity generation of all three countries. Lithuanian Energy Minister Dainius Kravis stated that if it is possible to implement the planned, the Baltic States can become a significant player in the energy market.

ABC.AZ reports that according to Kravis, cooperation of the countries of the region will make power generation more efficient, will make it possible to open energy-intensive industries. Another advantage is acceleration of the process of introducing electricity generation based on renewable energy sources.

If earlier the energy sector of the Baltic States was closely connected with the energy of its neighbors - Russia and Belarus, then in February 2025 the agreement on electricity supply within the unified electric power system of Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (BRALL) will cease to operate. The Baltic States, which was the only region not connected to the continental European electricity grid, will combine the networks with the EU energy system.
