November 21, Fineko/abc.az. Scientists of the KamSU named after Vitus Bering and the Kamchatka branch of the Pacific Institute of Geography of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed an innovative method for cleaning seawater from oil and metals using brown algae.

ABC.AZ reports that the study showed that brown algae such as Hedophyllum bongardianum and Fucus distichus are able to purify water by 60-70%.

These algae species have proven to be particularly resistant to anthropogenic pollution, including oil and metal, and have unique features in the formation of bacterial communities on their surface, gazetu.ru reports.

This method is of great importance for development of Avacha Bay, where it is planned to build a multifunctional transit hub port for cargo handling on domestic and international lines, including the use of the Northern Sea Route. It is also planned to create a modern refrigerated complex and berthing facilities for commercial and military fleets.
