November 25, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. changed its position on the global plastic pollution treaty.
ABC.AZ reports that now the U.S. opposes mandatory restrictions on the production of this material.
White House officials have told environmental organizations that they do not consider mandatory production quotas realistic. Instead, the U.S. will support a "flexible approach" where countries set voluntary goals themselves.
This completely contradicts the August position of the administration, when the U.S. planned to join Norway, Peru and the UK in supporting restrictions.
Representatives of environmental organizations called this decision "absolutely devastating".
Now almost 70 countries support the idea of limiting production. They consider it pointless to clean up garbage while its production continues to grow.
However, oil exporting countries are promoting a less ambitious treaty with voluntary national goals instead of binding global rules.
