November 28, Fineko/abc.az. The total amount of counterfeit dollars imported into Turkey from abroad may exceed $1 billion, ABC.AZ reports, referring to business newspaper Ekonomim.

Earlier it was reported that counterfeit banknotes, allegedly worth $600 million, were smuggled into Turkey. A significant part of them have face value of $50, which is why exchange offices and banks have temporarily stopped operations with these banknotes, as well as old-style $100 bills. According to experts, the bulk of the counterfeit dollars were imported in Turkey from Syria, Iran, and the Balkans.

According to Economim, the first operation with counterfeit currency was carried out in the Syrian border city of Gaziantep, counterfeit dollars were also found in tourist Antalya, Izmir, Istanbul.
