December 13, Fineko/abc.az. After the regime of Bashar al-Assad, Syria is experiencing not only a political, but also an economic crisis. The dollar and the Turkish lira, which had been banned in Syria for years, began to be used again after the Syrian lira lost much value. Banks and currency exchange offices faced serious difficulties.
ABC.AZ infors that according to Turkish newspaper Sözcü, a Syrian citizen explained the Assad regime in this way:
"Under Assad, only Syrian money was used. Other currencies were not valid. We could only receive Syrian money from the Central Bank. Money management was under the control of the state. Now everything has changed."
On June 20, 2024, Bashar al-Assad passed a law banning all currencies except the Syrian lira.
According to this law, Syrian citizens were forced to use only Syrian lira to purchase any product or service.
Buying a currency that has depreciated much has significantly limited its purchasing power.
Those who did not comply with this law were liable to imprisonment.
