Permit of the only uranium mining company in EU canceled

December 20, Fineko/abc.az. A Finnish court has decided to partially revoke the ecological permit of Terrafame, which operates in the mining and chemical industries.

ABC.AZ informs that the revoked permit was issued to Terrafame in 2022, but since that moment the company has increased production, which also became the reason for the withdrawal of environmental approval from it. The company must apply for a new permit, taking into account the new production levels.

Terrafame operates on the territory of Sotkamo region in Finland. This state became the first in the EU to produce uranium. However, so far, Terrafame's production is very modest: by 2026, the company plans to extract about 200 tons of uranium annually.
