Turkey tests Halkali-Kapikule railway to connect Istanbul with EU

January 13, Fineko/abc.az. Turkey has started testing a high-speed railway connecting Istanbul with the European Union.

ABC.AZ reports that the project is aimed at improving the efficiency of regional transportation and strengthening international relations. It is partially funded by the World Bank, which helps accelerate its development and implementation.

The new railway called Khalkali-Kapikule is also known as the Silk Railway. Launched in 2021, it includes construction of 229 km of modern infrastructure. The project includes extending the line to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

Currently, about 600,000 passengers travel on it annually, and by 2028 this number is expected to reach 3.4 million.

The Silk Railway is to be launched in 2028.
